    How spicy is Arsonist’s Lullaby?

The following excerpt from the novella Arsonist’s Lullaby is NSFW and subject to change during editing. Please check trigger warnings.

    Lucy

“Don’t be afraid,” he whispers, and my pulse races. I reach for him again, and this time I don’t flinch when my skin touches his. It’s not a burn but relief that I feel, atoms reunited. Hand in hand, he leads me out of the rows of pews and into a confession booth. It’s even quieter inside, hushed by velvet curtains and cushions. My body sinks into the seat with relief.

He kneels at my feet and runs his fingers along the inside of my leg. My breath is ragged. I don’t move, just watch and wait.

“I could never wait until marriage,” he says. “Imagine if the sex is bad.”

“Need a trial run, for sure,” I agree, breasts tight and heavy.

“May I?” he asks and, when I nod, he reaches behind me and plucks my bra undone through my cotton dress. Some of the pressure in my chest releases while the needful pain deepens, my nipples aching to be sucked. He leans forward and presses hot lips to my inner calf, heat rocketing to my clit. “Tell me when to stop,” he whispers, kissing his way up my skin.

I spread my legs wider in response.

His lips trail over the curve of my knee, up the tender flesh of my thigh, my panties clinging to me by the time he reaches the hem of my dress. He pushes it up to my hips, still kissing, and stops at where cotton covers my pussy. He draws a ragged breath.

“Lucy,” he pleads, “tell me to stop if you don’t want this.”

I press his hand to me and he moans, rubbing the wet fabric against my clit.
“You smell so good,” he whispers, “I want to eat you.”

“Then stop talking,” I say, “and do it.”

My legs are on his shoulders in a flash, panties around my ankles and kicked off somewhere in the booth. His mouth sucks my lips into him, tongue flat against my clit. I gasp, gripping the carved wood frame, bracing a foot against the other end. His tongue, soft at first, hardens, thrusting against me in a massage that immediately makes my legs shake, all control gone. All I can do is let go, go limp against the incensed cushions and let him take my body. The heat and hardness of his tongue is just a promise of what’s to come if I’m very good.

His teeth sink into my clit and I gasp, throwing my head back in delight at the sensation. He nibbles with just the right amount of teeth, staring up at me from partially under my dress, gauging my reaction. All I can do is nod, grateful that finally someone other than me is taking care of this endless need that’s been burning inside me. The more quakes he draws out, the more I need all of him. Even then, it’ll never be enough. The thought should scare me but I’m riding adrenaline stacked. When he comes up for air, I’m grabbing his face, pulling him in for a kiss that tastes of me, and riding him into forgiveness.

A cough echoes through the cathedral, and we freeze.

“Is… is someone in here?” I whisper.

“Maybe,” his lips move against me, and I cry out, unable to stop myself. “My God you taste heavenly.” Looking up at me, he licks me off his mustache, a devilish glint in his eyes.

From outside the confession booth, a man clears his throat. “Folks, I just need to prepare for service tonight.”

Eyes still locked, Stixx and I burst into laughter. He slips my panties back on, gives me a hand up, and we hop out of the booth like we were just taking pics.

“Father,” he says with a nod, and we stroll out, the scent of burning thick in the air. Sirens still drown out the noise of the city, and we walk to my car and his bike hand in hand. I look down at them in surprise, but don’t let go. I’m not ready.

The only constant in life is its challenges. We can either spend all our energy avoiding them, trying to fix them, or staying on our path. It’s all hard, so we have to choose the right hard for us. Sometimes there are no fixes, so the best thing to do is stay the course.

When I wrote A Touch of Gold in 2020, we’d lost my Noni and our family home. I baked my grief into the book, and wrote a way for Goldie to save her family’s home.

Cut to 2025, I’m working on the last book in the series while staring down the barrel of being homeless.

I really don’t need any more writing inspiration! 😅

The only constant in life is its challenges. We can either spend all our energy avoiding them, trying to fix them, or staying on our path. It’s all hard, so we have to choose the right hard for us. Sometimes there are no fixes, so the best thing to do is stay the course.

    For me, that means writing.

It’s really hard to focus when everything is crashing around you. Lately I’ve been practicing my original reason for writing: to stay sane. Over the years, my why evolved first to keeping my mind occupied while sick and unemployed, then to giving my readers more of the story they loved. I struggle with the fawn trauma response, so I’ve done a lot of people pleasing over the years, almost always to my detriment. Going back to basics and writing for myself has been so healing.

Whether you’re struggling with health issues, horrified by the evils of the world, or going through something else entirely, it’s a good time to pause and reflect on your why. You don’t have to be a writer to have a why; my best friend says her five children are hers. It can be that simple and wholesome. We all need a light that keeps us going.

    What’s yours?

    What I’m Working On

Summer is in full swing, and for me that means a renewed focus on my work in progress, Sleeve of Hearts. It’s slow going as ever, but a change in attitude has made things a bit easier. Instead of beating on myself for only being able to do one thing a day—often that one thing is making a meal—I’m shifting to focusing on one thing at a time. I’m practicing prioritizing my needs and keeping my expectations realistic. Much like anything else in life, it’s a work in progress; it’s a practice, never perfect. I’m practicing remembering that.

I’m so grateful for my publisher for being so understanding and supportive while I duke it out with this book and my own body and brain. Their publishing schedule is set for the next two years, so I’m hoping Sleeve of Hearts will see a 2028 release.

You don’t have to wait three years to go back to Stagwood Falls, though!

Get a (Fictional) Tattoo for Only $5

Inflation’s fucking crazy lately. I’m sure I don’t even want to know the going hourly rate for a tattoo these days. Let my apprentice Kinsley tattoo you fictionally!

I’ll turn you into a character in Sleeve of Hearts and your fictional self will receive a tattoo, microblading or permanent makeup, or haircut or braiding from apprentice Kinsley. All you have to do is upgrade to a paid sponsor of my newsletter for $5/month!

I’ll post a rough draft of your scene on my website, and you’ll see the edited version in the published book.

Don’t worry, if you don’t want to upgrade, you’ll still get my free reader newsletter and occasional goodies. But if you do upgrade, you’ll also get access to serialized editions of my books and exclusive goodies (like new stickers before they even hit my shop).

This summer, I’m having six MRIs and a tilt table study to assess what lupus is doing all up in my brain and nervous system. I could let the fear freeze me in place, or I can choose to see these scary tests as a scheduled nap and amusement park ride. I’m somewhere in between—like I said, I’m practicing.

May you always be in practice as a beautiful work in progress, too.

Bastards Break Rules (An Exclusive Snippet from MORE THAN A BASTARD)

    Bastard

There is something festering inside me. It’s been eating away at me for as long as I can remember, no matter how hard I pretend it isn’t there, no matter how far I shove it down. I’ve spent decades building a cage around it, reinforcing steel with concrete and barbed wire. Yet deep in the night, when only echoes are awake, I can hear it scraping away at my defenses. It is coming for me, and it will destroy everything I love.

That’s why I sit at this salvaged table, gavel in hand. Because if the monster is going to get me, then I’m not going down without a fight. I’m leaving a future for my son, for the only good thing I’ve ever done. If there is a monster inside me, then he is my salvation. And I will do whatever it takes to save him from myself.

I bang the gavel against the table, my grip firm. “Calling the first meeting of the River Reapers MC to order,” I say through a grin.

Mercy grins back from my right. “Hear, hear.”

Mercy and I have been through everything together. We were in that dusty motherfucking theater, and neither of us came back whole. The problem is, I was never whole to begin with. Not even Mercy knows why. It’s the one thing I’ve never been able to tell him.

“Am I supposed to take notes?” our Treasurer Mark asks, a pen cap clamped between his teeth.

“Hell if I know. I’ve never done this before.” I look around the table at the five men Mercy and I gathered. The seven of us couldn’t be more different, but we all have one thing in common.

We love the freedom that comes with riding.

“I’ll take notes. We all know you can’t spell for shit,” Donny says. He’s our only black member. It’s practically unheard of, even though it’s 1991. It’s almost the new millennium, for fuck’s sake. White bikers aren’t supposed to mix with women or black people, but fuck that. If I’m going to build a better tomorrow and save my soul, save my son, then I’m going to break all of the rules.

    Trigger warnings for Her Mercy

Although I purposely wrote Her Mercy to be a bit less dark than A Disturbing Prospect and A Risky Prospect, it still contains some themes that might be uncomfortable or even triggering for some readers. As a rape survivor, I am a huge supporter of trigger warnings in entertainment; I cannot tell you how many seemingly fluffy romances I picked up, only to find themes I wasn’t mentally prepared for. When you have PTSD or something else you struggle with, being equipped is an essential tool in your recovery.

Here are the potential trauma triggers, as well as a content warning.

    • Age gap romance: There is a substantial age difference between Bree and Mercy; she is 14 and he is 33 when this book begins.
    • Drug and alcohol use: Some characters use drugs and drink alcohol.
    • Childhood sexual assault: Several characters have a history of being molested as children.
    • Guns and violence: My vigilante bikers use guns to fight the bad guys, as well as other violent means of taking out the trash.
    • PTSD from rape: A character experiences flashbacks, anxiety, and other symptoms of PTSD due to being raped by a teacher. Most of this is mentioned vaguely, on purpose; I needed to write a bit of a lighter book after A Risky Prospect.

If you feel that you won’t be safe reading Her Mercy, please don’t risk your health. As a rape survivor and someone with PTSD, I wish many books came with a list of trigger warnings. No book is worth your well-being.

Please also note that I don’t necessarily condone or endorse the themes contained in this book. I do, however, wish it was legal to kill rapists. 😉

If you’ve read Her Mercy and feel that I may have missed something, please email me.

    Read Her Mercy

Runaway Bree shatters veteran Mercy’s peace when she shows up on his MC’s doorstep, then his heart when she runs away again. Can he find her and make up for twenty years lost?

    Her Mercy, Chapter 1

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

Same old Claudine, with “cunt” tattooed down between her tits. Another reason I hate her, but not the reason. “I must’ve got off the wrong stop.” I turn back toward the train.

Somewhere in Connecticut, Ravage is laughing at me.

    Catch Up

Her Mercy is a River Reapers MC novella. This book can be read as a standalone, or pairs well with A Disturbing Prospect and A Risky Prospect.

    Part 1: The Drifter

    Chapter 1

    Bree
    Now

I breathe a sigh of relief as the train pulls out of the station. He didn’t come after me. I didn’t really expect him to, considering I kind of just dropped that bomb on him and walked away. Typical me. Still, there was a slim chance he’d chase me, but he didn’t.

No one is chasing me now.

I lean back against the seat and watch through the window as New Haven, Connecticut fades away. It occurs to me that I don’t really have a reason to run. Ravage thought it might be best until things cool off, but I could’ve told him to go fuck himself. Instead, I took his money and let his Prospect collect me and drop me off.

It doesn’t take a psychoanalyst to figure out why I keep running from this state.

By now I should be tired of running. The truth is, I find it thrilling. Leaving not only gives me a clean slate, but also an opportunity. There are fifty states in this country and millions of people—ample places and faces to get to know.

I always end up back here.

    Not this time.

    This time will be different.

    This time, I’ll stay away.

The train rolls into Norfolk, Virginia thirteen hours later. The conductor on the loudspeaker pronounces it “No Fuck,” informing us that this is the last stop. I peer out the window, scanning the dusty parking lot for my ride and new roommate. There are too many people milling around, so I grab my bag and get off the train.

I step to the side so I’m not blocking the other passengers getting off and shield my eyes with a hand. I wish I’d thought to grab his sunglasses. They were some silly designer frames, but they’d come in handy right about now.

I’ve got no idea what this woman is supposed to look like, and I don’t have a cell phone, either. If she doesn’t show, I’ll have to figure something else out. I don’t panic because I always do.

    “Bree?”

I wrinkle my nose at the woman in front of me. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“I never kid around.” She winks.

Same old Claudine, with the word “cunt” tattooed down between her tits, her dark hair streaked through with red. “I must’ve got off the wrong stop,” I mutter, turning back toward the train.

Somewhere in Connecticut, Ravage is laughing his ass off.

“Oh, come on, Bree. It’s all water under the bridge.” She grabs my bag, spinning me around. “Besides, you look beat. And hungry. You always got bitchy when you haven’t eaten.”

“I’m even more bitchy when you’re around.” I smooth my paisley skirt across my thighs. It’s threadbare, but I’ll wear it ’til it dies.

“So let’s even you out, then. You look like you could use a burger. Three, maybe.” She eyes the way my skirt hangs on my hips, how my ankles barely fill my boots.

I sigh. I am hungry. There’s nowhere else for me to go, anyway, at least not right now. “Fine,” I relent, “but you’re buying.”

I follow her to a beat up Subaru, watching her bony ass in that tight little skirt. I can’t believe Ravage shacked me up with her. I’d just as soon be on the streets again. Which is probably where I’ll go, the second my stomach is full.

I expect her to take me to a restaurant, somewhere I can just slip out when we’re done. Instead, she drives the half hour to Hampton, where she pulls into a cute condo complex.

    “Home sweet home,” she sings.

I flinch. This can’t possibly be her place. It looks so normal. I glare at the townhouse, crossing my arms.

“Oh, stop. Some of us get our lives together. Even a backwarmer like me.” She pushes open the driver’s side door and gets out, grabbing my bag from the backseat. Without another word, she marches inside, leaving the front door open.

Backwarmer. I sniff. More like homewrecker.

My stomach growls, reminding me what I came here for. As soon as I finish eating, I’m out of here. I follow her in, closing the door behind me out of habit. Immediately I wish I’d left it open. It’s too loud in here, the walls painted an angry red. Blue armchairs, accent tables, and a coffee table try to anchor it, but the red and purple throw rugs only amplify it. Scarves in reds, blues, and purples cover the wall behind the blue couch.

    I rub my temples.

The outside might look normal, but the interior looks like Claudine threw up everywhere.

I wrap my arms around myself, longing for the eggshell walls of state housing.

The kitchen isn’t much better. The walls are still red, accented with more blue and a little golden yellow along the backsplash. I climb onto a stool at the counter dividing the kitchen from the dining area, and wrap my legs around its rungs.

Claudine dances around the kitchen, singing Bon Jovi while cooking. Another reason I hate her, but not the reason. She puts a plate of three cheeseburgers down in front of me, then sits across from me, her placemat empty. She folds her hands.

I pick up a burger, and grease drips between my fingers. The sensation makes me want to wipe my hands, but there’s no napkin holder on the table. I sink my teeth into the bun. Spices flood my senses, my mouth watering around the food. It’s good.

    Fucking Claudine.

    Of course she can cook.

While I’m chewing my second bite, she leans forward.

“What?” I ask with my mouth full. She doesn’t deserve manners, even if this might be the best burger I’ve ever had.

“I thought you’d wanna know,” she begins, her eyes intent on mine.

I take another bite, mostly so I don’t have to answer her. Almost one burger down. Two to go. Then I can go, too.

“Mercy’s getting out,” she says, and just like that, my day is ruined.
